It’s a big question for pet owners everywhere: Do I really need pet insurance?

At Pet & Vet we love pet insurance. Sometimes having pet insurance can be the difference between surgery and treatment or you pet not coming home. Insurance for your pets has come a long way since New Zealanders took pet insurance on- so whats right for you and your furry friend?

Who’s Covered?

Initially your puppy or kitten can be eligible for 4-6 weeks of free cover for up to $1500. All you need to do is fill out the necessary forms online to get started.

There are many policies to choose from, with claim limits from $2500 up to $15,000. Choices of accident and surgical, dental, even vaccinations, de-sexing and micro-chipping can be covered. Premiums can be as low as $10-$20 a month. Excesses vary depending on the policy- some can opt for "co-payment" i.e- the insurance pays for 80% and you pay for 20% of the claim.

There are no exclusions, however if your pet is a specific breed- like a French Bulldog for example which has congenital conditions (e.g brachycephalic face) or preexisting conditions, they may cost you more to insure.

You can even insure horses and exotics such as rabbits

Age Makes a Difference

As your pet gets older your premiums and excesses may increase, or you may have to change to a different policy. Policies covering diagnostic testing is a must at this stage of your pets life.

To claim, the paperwork required is often copies of your paid invoices, clinic notes and forms signed by your vet. Here at Pet & Vet, you can pay at discharge and then your insurance company will reimburse you- as long as you're aware of what your policy covers and which paperwork is required, the insurance company will do the rest!

So, do I need it?

Unforeseen expenses, surgical procedures, operations, medication, long-term treatments – they can quickly break the bank, adding one more major worry to an often-emotional experience.Vet bills are not subsidized and can prove to be expensive- especially in emergencies. Insurance policies widen your options so you can afford to make emotional decisions and get your pet home.

Remember: when selecting a plan be sure to find out what is, and isn’t, covered. Knowledge is key to making an informed decision and making sure you are getting the right deal for you and your beloved pets.

Ask for the forms next time you're visiting Pet & Vet Milford, and any other questions- Easy!
