Grooming in Winter, a hot topic!
With the cold, wet weather of winter starting to swirl around us, you may be tempted to think that you’re doing your pet a favour by holding off on his or her regular grooming until spring.
The truth is – you’re not.
Dog grooming isn’t just a hot weather thing! In fact, dog grooming during the winter months is just as important for the comfort and well- being of your pet as it is during the warmer months.
Underneath your dog’s top coat of fur is an undercoat. Think of this as your pet’s wool sweater. This layer of fur is what helps keep your pet warm in the winter and cool during the summer.
Without regular bathing and grooming, that undercoat is likely to become dirty, matted, and wet – especially if your dog spends time outdoors, & in Auckland it’s pretty tricky to dodge the showers!
Like a wool sweater, if the undercoat is not allowed the chance to breathe, it can It take forever to dry, become wretchedly uncomfortable and, after a while…well we all know that ‘wet dog’ aroma.
If you’re concerned that your pet will be too cold you could invest in a winter coat for the trips outside. The styles available now are super cool!
Make sure you’re brushing your pets coat in between grooms as brushing helps to keep mats away which only get worse the longer you leave it. If you come back from a walk or the beach and your pet is wet make sure you grab a towel and dry them off well as a wet coat can cause mats in the fur! – otherwise it’s like leaving a wet jacket on when you enter the house – a lot harder to dry off & warm up.
